Impact: Indonesia sustained the worst human losses and physical
damage in the tsunami and earthquake. More than 128,000 people
died, while at least 37,000 others remain missing.
The exact number of victims will probably never be known.
Six months on, decomposing bodies and skeletons are still being found.
About 500,000 people were made homeless.

IMPENDING 9.0 EARTHQUAKE WARNING

One year ago, October 01, 2003 Dr. Danny H. Natawidjaja, Indonesia Earthquake expert, warned that
based on geological research a 9.0 Earthquake on the
Richter Scale could be expected in the
Mentawai island area, off West Sumatra.
Therefore it was necessary that precautions be taken
to prepare for such a major earthquake.

The warning was issued in a meeting discussing geological conditions in the Street of Sunda held in the Auditorium of the Bandung Geological Museum October 1, 2003.
Other speakers at the meeting were:

Dr. Surono,
Chief Subdirectorate Vulcanology & Mitigation
and
Dr. Hamzah Latief,
Geologist of the Bandung Technological Institute (ITB).

The three speakers agreed that geological data on several Indonesian locations formed the main basis of the projection
that a major geological threat in the form of an Earthquake,
Vulcano explosion or Tsunami could be expected.

Dr. Danny Natawidjaja explained that cyclical seismic information showed that the top of the seismic cycle had been reached but that it was difficult to exactly project when the 9.0 Earthquake on the Richter Scale would occur.

This article was published in the Jakarta Daily "KOMPAS" on October 2, 2003 with summary translation by Indonesia-Pusaka 12/31/04
